Conformation
General Properties - Max is a steady, sociable, very willing little dog who is always cheerful and eager for whatever comes next. He is agile and active without being hyper. He gets along well with dogs of both sexes, loves people, and hasn’t made up his mind yet about cats. He is a very clean proper, well balanced, 61 pound dog. He is white with a fawn patch over one side of his head; he has the jet black heavy pigment and almost black eyes which are typical of his mother’s line. Overall, we would characterize his movement is good, with an excellent roll and strong rear movement; he comes in very slightly in front.
Head and Neck - Max has outstanding width and turn of jaw; he is absolutely true and buttons up perfectly with none of his straight little teeth showing. He has a beautifully proportioned brick-shaped skull with a deep stop extending the full length of the skull. He is very strong through the foreface. The layback of his skull and nose are flat. His ears are well-set along the line of his skull, and very fine; they rosed perfectly without gluing, as did the ears on all five of his littermates. He is well wrinkled without being coarse, with an old-fashioned broken nasal fold and just enough flews and dewlap to frame a beautifully structured skull. He has a muscular, moderately arched neck. His nose is beautifully laid back along the line of the skull, with wide nostrils and a good throat.
Body - Max is a compact, cobby, short- coupled dog with a beautiful topline and a very low set. almost straight tail. He is heavy boned and well-muscled. He has well-sprung rib and nice brisket and tuck up. He has good width through the shoulder and chest. Viewed from the front, he conforms to the “Betty Davey square” described in the Bulldogger. He has neat cat feet and strong pasterns, but is somewhat prone to interdigital cysts. He has strong hips and rear.
Temperament and Health - Max is an easy dog to live with – he is cheerful, intelligent and easy to get along with, with no quirks or sensitivities. He is equally playful with people and other dogs, but just as happy to curl up alone in his bed with a toy if that’s what the day holds. He bounces up for new adventures, and bounces back into his house just as eagerly when the adventure is over. Max’s overall health is excellent; his only complaints have been occasional interdigital cysts, and mild seasonal allergies.
Show Record
Max lives with his co-owners outside Philadelphia, and was not shown at all as a pup or a young adult. We showed him for the first time at age two, and he was trained to show in the show ring. His first two weekends out he figured out the ground rules and learned to stand on a ramp; he came away with several class wins and placements at the October specialties and specialty backup shows/sponsored entries. In December, we took him to the Boston cluster for weekend number three, where he was BOW the first day under English breeder-judge Fred Haynes, for his first major. On day 2, he was BOW under breeder judge Donna Mouser, for major number two. Day three was an all-breed judge, and he went fourth in open. Day four, breeder-judge Dick Mouser gave him a major reserve. At the LIBC specialty in February, Max took Best of Winners under British Judge Les Cotten and he finished his championship under British Judge Anthony Darmanin at BCNJ with his second five point specialty win.
Breeding Record
What’s Behind Him
Max's father, Ch. Shrink-a-Bull Top Gun (“Gunner”), is nine and a half and
still actively used at stud. He’s a little arthritic and
his eyes are a little dry, but he still hops on and off his favorite recliner,
and he still dances for dinner. He’s still eager and willing to make puppies.
He has two champions, with another six in the home stretch and a new group ready
to start soon. Max's paternal grandfather
Ch. DEYDEL STEADFAST HERCULES lived to 10; Herc's father
CH GLYNDEBOURNE ROYAL FANFARE and a
littermate lived to 13, and their mother lived to 15. Sonny's mom, Ch. Helfyre's
One Hot Number, is six, with no health problems. Her mother, Ch. Helfyre-Lebo's
Grace Poupon, and grandmother, Ch. Helfyre's I'll Show You, are
still going strong at age 8 and 10 respectively. Sonny's maternal grandfather,
CH. CHEROKEE DAKOTA ROBERT, broke the then all-time record for
specialty best of breeds as a veteran being shown in BOB against his great
grandchildren. Robert’s dad, CH PRESTWICK GAWAIN, is holding his own at 12.
Gunner is described and pictured on our web site. He came to live with us when
he was seven, and was not actively at stud until then. His first few pups are
now in the show ring. Sonny’s sister, Ch. Resolute Rynkly Helfyre, was Winner’s
bitch at the Bulldog Club of Connecticut Specialty, earning her second major,
and 9th point, that weekend. She is a multiple breed winner and group placing
from the classes and was pointed at the BC Central Canada specialty up north. From a breeding to Resolute Mountain
Melody, Resolute Absolute Force has nine points and
Resolute Magic Dragon (“Puff”) was Best in Sweepstakes
under Pat Hartle and Reserve Winners Dog and Best Puppy under Frank Kauffman
from the 9-12 month class at the BCNJ Specialty. Puff was Best Puppy Dog at the
BC Connecticut Match Show from the 6-9 month class under Fred Haynes. He has 13
points and three majors, two under breeder/judges. From breeding to
Ch. Camelot’s Steadfast Jezebel, Ch.
Camelot’s Brazin Hussy she was Best Puppy in Match at Lower Susquehanna BC under
Paul Thornburg and BOS in Futurity at BCNJ under Jill Lange.
Herc and Herc's parents are also described and pictured on our web site, along
with most of the champions Herc produced. Herc is a Hall of Fame producer, as
are both his parents.
Max's dam, Ch. Helfyre's One Hot Number (Zoë), finished with four majors with
most of her points under breeder judges. She completed her championship with a
four point major, going Best of Breed over six specials. She has produced two
champions from her first breeding to Ch. Warmvalley Buddy Boy; both finished
with specialty majors and specialty sweeps wins. Zoë's dam,
Ch. Helfyre-Lebo's Grace Poupon (Gracie) ,
has produced three champions to date, including the number one bitch in the
country, Ch. Helfyre Little Pond Promise. Gracie's sire, Ch. Shrink-A-Bull Snow
Drift, finished with multiple specialty majors. Gracie finished with specialty
majors, as did her dam, Ch. Helfyre's I'll Show You (Patch), who finished with
two specialty majors. Patch's sire, Ch. Kozabull Glyndebourne Zeke, was the top
bulldog in the county in the early 1990's, and is also a Hall of Fame Top
Producer. Zeke's sire, Ch. Hoogh's Royal Ambassador (Lefty), had multiple
specialty Best of Breeds, and finished with specialty majors, including a
Nationals week win; he is also in the BCA Producers Hall of Fame. The bitch line
behind Max is exceptionally strong and produces a very consistent look. Zoe's
line, bred by Sara Carnrick, has been remarkably consistent through at least
four generations; this line of bitches consistently produces exceptional
toplines and tail sets, beautiful fronts and very classic "English-type" heads
with tremendous length, perfect layback, very wide jaws, and beautiful stops.
The ears tend to be very fine and feet are very small and tight. They tend to
run big, and colors could be improved.
